20 years of Manga in Europe

In twenty years, mangakas are a full-fledged part of the European world of comics and their works, that have never stopped influencing European creation, are among the most respected

Japanese comic strips began the conquest of Europe twenty years ago. They would totally revamp our ideas as well as the ways we understand, create and publish comics. At the time when Glenat began the publication of the series “Aldra”, by Katsuhiro Otomo (1989), Europeans still had a perception of Japanese comics deformed by traditional television programmes for children. Twenty years later, mangakas are a full-fledged part of the European world of comics and their works, that have never stopped influencing European creation, are among the most respected. The exhibit at the Belgian Comic Strip Center proposes to explore the many paths that link one to the other.
